Jefferson St. in the West Loop was home to dance parties hosted by legendary Chicago DJ Frankie Knuckles, who helped create house music and popularize it around the world. Returning to for its 20th anniversary summer season, the 2024 Chicago House Music Festival will take to Millennium Park on Sunday, June 2nd from 10 a.m. Opened in 1982, this tiny Wrigleyville basement club hosted Frankie Knuckles as its first DJ. Today, you’ll hear an assortment of house DJs from all over the world play, including legendary Chicago house DJ Derrick Carter, who maintains a residency at Smartbar. The single "Love Can't Turn Around," credited to Farley "Jackmaster" Funk and featuring vocals by Chicago gospel singer Darryl Pandy, was released in 1986.
House continued to evolve with Ron Hardy promoting a faster style of DJing than was previously the norm. His distinctive, more aggressive style was a stark contrast to Knuckles’ more soulful sound. And producer Marshall Jefferson caused international buzz, with “The House Music Anthem (Move Your Body),” plus partnerships with Sleezy D, Hercules, and Jungle Wonz, among others. The landmark designation protects the 113-year-old structure’s facade and roofline elevations from alteration or demolition. Preservationists and the music community feared it may be in jeopardy after the building, which is currently home to law offices, went on the market and was listed as an “opportunity to clear the site for new development.” The building was sold to two lawyers in December 2022.
It wasn’t until Jefferson distributed copies of the track to DJs such as Lil Louis, Fast Eddie and Frankie Knuckles that the self-proclaimed, ‘House Music Anthem’ finally got its recognition. With glowing reviews in the US, the track trickled over to international scenes, captivating the minds of English DJs, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling. With shining jazz piano riffs and Jefferson incessantly singing of his love for house music, it’s a wonder how this staple was ever rejected. It led to Jefferson and Knuckles’ first-ever house music tour throughout the UK, bringing Chicago house to ripe European minds. Detroit, where fantastical imagination and ambition proved the perfect escape from stunted urbanism. Many places have made an indelible mark on the sound of dance music, but few would be foolish enough to refute Chicago as the birthplace of house.
